Battery life is an understandable concern when shopping for laptops, especially refurbished or second user machines.
Whilst a laptop battery is a consumable component, we believe it should still perform well, and we take steps to be clear on each machine that we sell. Battery capacities do lower over time, and can degrade more quickly if some simple best practices in everyday use are not followed.
All of the laptops sold on The Tech Outlet website have gone through thorough battery testing, to ensure we can be confident that you are getting great value. We run battery reports that tell us how much wear each battery has experienced and quote these figures on our product pages.
An average laptop battery size would offer somewhere around 42Wh (or 42,000mWh) when brand new. This means when fully charged to 100% this is the most charge it can hold and at this point it offers the longest run time. There are plenty of examples of much bigger batteries, for example, the Dell Latitude range often has a battery offering 58Wh or 63Wh, some of the more powerful gaming or design ranges can go to 90Wh and beyond.
Balancing the value of a refurbished laptop must always include the health of the battery. We generally stick to offering laptops with a battery health of at least 70% (much more in the majority of cases). If the battery originally had 42Wh then we would expect to see it offer at least 29Wh otherwise it'd be swapped by us before sale. There are a few occasions where a bigger initial capacity would mean the acceptable percentage level is lower, such as a 63Wh battery having a 60% capacity would still offer over 37Wh, but we would always make this clear and the price would be adjusted to reflect.
