Keep your laptop running well - ongoing laptop maintenance

Posted by Ben Quinlan on

Keeping your laptop clean is an important task. A simple routine that covers physical surface cleaning, airflow, and basic software/operating system maintenance can help ensure smooth running for years to come.

Most of us are guilty of eating and drinking near our laptops, this is a really bad idea, one small mistake can be fatal for your laptop.  Try to keep any liquids well away from the same surface that your laptop is sitting on, a small splash of water, tea/coffee, etc can cause so much damage to a laptop, often resulting in beyond economical repair - it really isn’t worth taking the risk.

Bits of food can get into tiny gaps in your laptop (under the keys for example) and cause real problems, food and drink over or near your laptop is a no no.

We use the following tools during our refurbishment of laptops - if you choose to buy one, then use with care, and start slow.  The screwdriver set is more expensive than most but is excellent quality and offers the perfect range of screw head tips.

Safe physical cleaning

  • Always shut down, unplug, and let the laptop cool before any cleaning.

  • Use a microfibre cloth slightly dampened with water, or a mild screen cleaner for the screen and case; never spray liquid directly on to any part of the laptop.  A dry microfibre cloth can help remove any smear marks after cleaning.

  • For the keyboard and touchpad, wipe with a damp (not wet) microfibre cloth; for heavier dirt, a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on the cloth is safe for most laptops (again, only damp, not wet).

  • Tip crumbs out by gently turning the laptop upside down or strand it on its side (do not hold the laptop upside down by the corner of the palmrest as this can cause the casing to crack), then use compressed air or a soft brush or cloth to loosen debris between keys.  Do this very gently, as a damaged key bed can become a problem.

Keeping vents and fans clear

  • Keep all air vents clear with short bursts of compressed air or an electronics brush; do not jab anything into the holes or spin the fan aggressively.

  • Clean external vents every 1–3 months if you use the laptop daily, more often in dusty rooms, or if you live with pets.

  • Use the laptop on hard, flat surfaces (desk, stand) rather than bedding, cushions, or carpets so airflow is not blocked and less dust is sucked in.

Simple software maintenance

  • Keep the Operating System (Windows 11, etc), drivers, and apps updated for stability, performance, and security.  Type “check for updates” in to the search box and then follow the on-screen prompts.

  • Periodically remove temporary files and unused apps using built-in tools like Windows Storage Sense. Windows Storage Sense is an automated cleanup tool in Windows 10 and 11 that frees up disk space by deleting unnecessary files - such as temporary files, cache, and Recycle Bin items—when storage is low. It can be configured to run automatically on a schedule.

  • Limit startup/background apps and close heavy programs you are not using, especially on battery, to keep things responsive and cooler.

  • Run regular antivirus/malware scans (weekly or monthly depending on risk) to prevent slowdowns and crashes.  We recommend using the built-in Windows Defender anti-virus, it runs in the background and is a very competent solution - no need to spend any money on a commercial solution.

How often to do what

  • Quick wipe of screen/keyboard and visual vent check: as you see fit from a visual inspection - probably weekly for a daily‑use laptop.

  • Deeper vent/fan dusting from outside: every 1–3 months; sooner if you hear fan noise or feel the laptop getting hotter.

  • Software cleanup (temporary files, unused apps, startup review): every month.
